Walking like the weight of the world was on his shoulders Skorm made his way through the streets of Afacia it was early morning the sun had not yet risen and wouldn't so for a few more solemn hours, he walked as though in a daze walking past the taverns that were still open ignoring the pissed fools that jeered at him as he walked past, his armor shredded, sword dulled from the seemingly endless combat that the day had bought, his shield strapped to his back looked worse for wear, walking with a limp where a arrow had speared him in the thigh it niggled him slightly but he ignored it, Illinar had blessed him with a faster healing rate to other people and Skorm was glad of it.
He barely acknowledged the guards to the chapter house as he approached them, the others had most likely arrived before him, glancing around the yard he saw Duncan barking orders to some of the guards they didn't look too pleased this made Skorm smirk slightly as he headed towards his small chambers.

His room was small and sparse, a simple cot bed, chest and weapon rack, what little light there was he used to light the candles and to shed his broken armor, he looked at his sword he sighed and blowing out the candles he made his way towards the forge, his mind full of the events of the past few days and the loss of Sir Alistair, his body groaned for rest but he would only do so once he had replenished his lost gear and repaired his damaged stuff, with a exhausted sigh he closed the door, his gaze lingering on his bed for a second before trudging off towards the forge.
'...I'll sleep when I'm dead...' he muttered to himself.

As they got back to Alistair’s rooms (she would never be able to think of them in any other way), Eloise noted with approval that an extra chair had been put at the table and more food had been brought.

She waved Lissa to her place and offered her tea. She poured a cup for herself and sat down opposite.

Eloise looked tired, but no more so than any of them, and certainly no more so than the guards who looked tired and on edge as their leaders’ behaviour affected theirs. What Lissa did see when she checked to see how Eloise fared, was a tightness around the eyes and a wariness in her looks which had not been in evidence before.

Smiling tightly, Eloise passed the bread. “I’m glad you are here” she said. “Anything you need, let me know. You have free access to the chapter house if you wish to stay, or go…” She stopped herself abruptly.

“I am sorry” She continued with a half smile. “You wanted to speak to me…”

Scale allows Duncan to lead him to the mess hall and dutifully spoons down some hot broth all the while mumering incoherently.

"Information...Must pass on information...No-one is here...Where are...Only the Order...No-one else...Where are they...Bringers and Leno...They are scared...Scared of it...Using us to...Jared...Murderer...Avatars...Fae and Dwarves...Afacians...All of us..."

Scale continues to mumble through mouthfuls and eventually allows someone to escort him to a room.

"I've put off sleep for too long...Even a Dragonkin cannot go without forever...Need sleep."

Scale collapses onto a bed fully clothed and with seconds is asleep.

Lissa sipped at her tea, appreciating the feeling of the heat seeping into her chilled body. "In Heligtum we set out to do what we could against the crusade, and we succeeded in damaging and hopefully slowing them. But we all know they are still coming. Afacia will be the front line in tfhat war and I know the Order will be at the heart of the defence. I want to help, Eloise, if you'll have me. Scale will let the Pack know where I am, once he finds them, and I don't expect the alphas to object, for the beastkin stand to suffer more than most if Afacia falls. I can help in the armouries with your preparation and in the battle when they get here."

She paused, hesitant then added "But there is something you must know first..." She paused again, sipped at her tea awkwardly then pulled herself up and said quietly: "You know, from our conversations at Heligtum, that I was born Afacian but renounced my family and country. What I did not say was that I left Afacia as a wanted outlaw, for I killed the man who killed my sister. That was twenty-five years ago and I doubt any would recognise me now for the scared child I was when I fled, but his family were powerful and it could cause the Order embarrasssment if anything did come to light while I was here. So it's right that you should know, be able to choose whether it's a risk you're willing to take..."

Duncan sat across from the beastkin, watching him shovel down the lentil soup he had provided. He briefly thought that food might be a good idea before the idea turned his stomach.

Between mouthfuls Scales mumbled half sentences and incoherent sounds, Duncan tried desperately to concentrate on what was being said but he let his mind wander back to Heligtum.

It took a few moments for Duncan’s mind to snap back to the one-sided conversation being had at the moment. He’ hoped he hadn’t insulted his guest by not responding but everything would have to wait till later.

Duncan called one of the guards to show Scales to one of the empty quarters before retiring to his own quarters for some much needed sleep.

Dreams, vivid and stark made Skorm wake with a start, he had sat down just for a moment to rest in the forge but had fallen asleep, light shone in through the windows and door and the sound of a busy keep rang out, some of the other blacksmiths were hard at work and had decided to leave him be where he sat, how long had he been asleep for? he wondered, rolling his aching shoulders he rose gingerly and looked at his work.
His sword sat beside the grinding stone waiting to be re-edged and a vambrace sat on the anvil before him half done, the other sat beside him, he looked at it remembering that he had sat down to fix the straps to it, he let out a yawn and decided to leave his work for now, his stomach knotted from hunger and his limbs still ached from lack of rest,

Making his way across the yard towards the mess he noticed Duncan leaving and heading off towards his billet, deciding not to call out to the tired sergeant he made his way to the mess for a well deserved meal.

John stumbled out of the bar.... the world spun around him and he spun falling against the wall and hanging on to it for dear life. He breathed deeply gulping in air and trying to stop the bile rising to burn in his throat from escaping his mouth. he swallowed deeply and chased the burning liquid with a long draw from the flask clutched in his left hand.

He stood up straight, wincing as his stump grated along the rough wall. He looked down fuzzily at the bandage swaddling the wound and for a moment his mind flashed back to the moment he felt it hacked from his wrist still holding Alistair. He sobbed at the thought and then glared around the filthy squalid street as if defying anyone to have noticed his weakness.

Pushing away from the wall john staggered into the middle of the street stopping to shake his addled head... how many days had he been lost in this drunken haze? He remembered coming back to the City, reporting to the king and then... well then nothing. He couldn't stay with the other, couldn't face Eloise or Duncan. He had Alistair in his grip and let him go.

John looked at the night sky spinning above him... he could never face them again, never!

'So sorry Alistair, so sorry.' He no longer knew if the litany was in his head or spoken out loud. Didn't matter anyway.

Johnfinished the flask in one long pull and hurled it into the night. He followed the sound of shattering into the darkness

Eloise smiled a tight smile which anyone who knew her well meant that it didn’t bode well for someone. “If.” She said shortly. “If anything comes to light and if anyone has a problem then they get to come through us.”

She smiled gently at Lissa. “I don’t have a sister, I only had Alistair, who I would have defended if I could, and who would have defended me to the end” she stopped for a second before continuing “but from what you have told me, I think I would have done the same thing. Family is family and it was deserved. I hold no blame to you for what you did.”

Eloise poured both of them another cup of tea and leaned back in her chair. “We would not have achieved so much in Heligtum, or survived as well as we did, without your help. I am glad to know you and glad that you have decided to stay.” She frowned a little, looking into her teacup. “The next few months will be hard and I could do with a friend. Thank you.”

Lissa only truly realised how apprehensive she was about the answer, how much it mattered to her to be able to stay, once Eloise replied and she felt the tension within herself relax.

"Alistair defended us all to the end and I'm sure in my heart it would have been his greatest comfort to know that you escaped alive. I know there is nothing I can say to ease your pain - only time and the chance to grieve will heal that wound - but, for the sake both of our friendship and of the debt I owe your brother, if there is anything I can do to ease the burdens that will fall on you in the days ahead then I am at your service. What we started in Heligtum, we will see through to its end, be it bitter or sweet."

She toyed awkwardly with her food, conscious of the sombre atmosphere, then her mouth twitched into a smile. "But I probably ought to clean up a bit first or your guards will take me for an undesirable and have me back out on the street."

The one thing Duncan thought as he lay awake in his bed was that he would never get to sleep, his mind still overactive from the events of the last few days. It was then that his fatigued body betrayed him and he fell asleep.

When he awoke some time later it felt as though he had only closed his eyes a second before. He slowly swung his legs from the bed and rose stretching just a little. The wound on his side where an arrow had pierced his chain still ached but there was too much to do, to get it seen to now. After the Sargent had washed and dressed he left his cell and went to find the captain of the guard.

Duncan caught up with the Captain in one of the store rooms.

“Captain, I want you to give me a full run down on how many men we can put into the field and get me an inventory list for both our armoury and food stores. And when you send the lists also send up Jones so he can read them to me.
And where the hell is John? I hope for his sake you find him before I do. I want him to take a squad of men into the catacombs and set up patrol roots."

With that Duncan turned and headed outside.

*In the yard, Father Gregor is watching some of the men at arms train. Occasionally he shouts out a comment or critique, and steps in to adjust a man's stance. As he steps away, he sees Duncan step out, and moves over to speak, a slight hitch in his step hinting at recently healed wounds.*

Morning, Duncan. Have you had any wounds cleaned and dressed? And have you seen John, I need to make sure he's kept that damn wound clean, or he'll lose his arm...

*Gregor trails off as he looks at Duncan*

Never mind that for now. How are you faring? Remember you or any of the Order can talk to me, either as a counsellor or as a friend.

Eloise returned the smile, conscious that she herself ought to wash up a little as well. “I’m sorry that’s the first thing I should have offered. Let me show you to your rooms and I will have some water and some fresh clothing sent over.”

She stood up and gestured to the door. “The guards will be able to help you with anything you require and I will be somewhere in the chapter house.”

As Eloise showed Lissa to a room, not much more than a monk’s cell, with pallet bed, empty armour stand, table and chair and one tapestry, depicting a long forgotten battle, she smiled again. “Our home is your home, for as long as you want it.”

Back in her brother’s rooms, Eloise washed quickly, ignoring the wounds that she hadn’t had time to dress and threw on a clean skirt and tunic.

Leaving the room with a swift backwards glance, she headed out into the training yard and sat down quietly on a bench at the edge. Soaking up the sunshine and nodding at Duncan and Father Gregor, who stood on the other side of the square.

As she began to relax, one of the squires ran in with a folded letter, and, letting the sun warm her, Eloise read it, smiling with satisfaction at the reply she had received.

Scale awoke. Briefly confused by his surroundings. Until he remembered where he was. He'd had a very strange dream but took comfort in what he'd seen there, the others were alive. They must be, Greenman wasn't the type of God to play at trickery and deceit.

He rose and quickly washed his face in the basin before discarding his coat, armour and boots. He made sure he still had his bag and left the room, wandering corridors feeling quite lost. After he'd managed to startle a maid, helped her pick up what she'd dropped she quietly pointed him in the direction of the outside.

Scale opened the door and was dazzled by the sunlight, he let his eyes get used to the brightness and then walked into the courtyard. He saw Eloise reading and several others training with the recruits. He thought it best he remain out of the way for now so found a warm sunbeam and sat down. Closing his eyes he slowed his breathing and enjoyed the sun.

When Eloise left, Lissa started going through her things, working out what could be repaired and what was beyond saving. She hesitated over the coat she had worn to conceal her armour in the forests, badly damaged by the blows she had taken in the final battle at the portal and crusted with blood, both her own and that of their enemies, but put it aside to be disposed of and set to removing her armour, carefully to avoid aggravating her wounds. They were mending well, testimony to the power of the healing she'd received from Aki after he dragged her near dead body through the portal; another debt she owed.

Most of her armour she judged repairable, except for the vambrace from her sword arm which would need to be replaced. She fished her tools out of her pack then sat down and started to prise the steel plates from its leather so that they could be reused.

Within a few minutes there was a knock at the door. She opened it to find the same guard who had turned her away from the gate earlier carrying a basin of hot water and a bundle of clothing. He blushed when he recognised her and started to stammer an apology. "I'm so sorry, I had no idea you were a friend of Lady Eloise, if I'd realised I'd never have..."

Lissa smiled, keen to put him at ease. "You have nothing to apologise for. You were on guard and did exactly what you should have. You had no reason to know me and I turned up when most of your comrades were still abed looking anything but respectable..." She laughed lightly "I'd be more likely to condemn you if you had let me in."

He placed the basin and the bundle on the table. Lissa gathered up the pile of items she'd judged past saving, paused, then removed the coat from it before handing the rest to the guard. "Could you dispose of these for me please? I'm afraid I don't know where anything is yet or I'd do it myself..."

"Of course m'lady. And if you do go out to explore the chapter house just ask for Lady Eloise's room and anyone will be able to direct you back here."

Lissa winced inwardly at the 'm'lady' but did not say anything, not wanting to make the departing man more uncomfortable than he already was.

Lady Eloise's room... Lissa glanced around at the stark room with its simple furnishings and smiled. She should have guessed as much for it suited Eloise perfectly.

Lissa made short work of washing, glad to be rid at last of the traces of battle. Opening up the bundle of clothes brought by the guard her heart sank to find it contained a skirt and tunic - simple enough but nonetheless daunting to someone who hadn't worn a skirt since childhood. Still, she thought as she pulled it on, it's not as though I've got to fight in the damned thing - just wear it for a few hours while my things dry and try not to trip over it in the meantime.

She washed the clothes she'd taken off, handling the tattered coat carefully, and opened the shutters so that she could hang them on the windowsill to dry. The sound of weapons training drifted in the opened window. She combed and tied back her still-wet hair, then buckled on her sword belt and gathered up her battered shield and armour before leaving the room.

Following the sound of the training she found her way to the courtyard. Duncan and Father Gregor were evidently busy supervising the training and Eloise appeared absorbed in some paper work. Looking around for someone she could ask for directions to the armouries without interrupting, she spied Scale and headed towards him instead. Unsure if he was asleep, meditating or just basking she approached quietly, eager to find out if he had any news of the Pack but not wishing to disturb him if he was meditating. A few steps from him however the skirt finally got the better of her and, catching her foot in the hem, she fell forwards showering Scale with her armful of armour and shield.
