The walls of Afacia city

Post by jamy » Fri Jul 26, 2013 2:52 pm

Bran grunted as he pushed the dead stunty over the wall, helped by the a couple of the members of the Afacian Militia. His arms were weak with fatigue but he pushed on regardless, refusing to show weakness in the face of men who had come to rely on his leadership.

Looking around at the wall, he realised there were no more stunties left to shift. He rested against the wall for a moment, watching men throw buckets of water onto what was left of the pyrites. He closed his eyes, and briefly the flashes and screams of the pyrites exploding came back to him. Shaking his head he walked towards the nearest sentry fire, looking for a place to sit and rest for awhile.

Crouching down by the fire he grinned at the men surrounding it, their returning smiles were a reassuring sight. He had learned to count on these men, and had been impressed by their stubborn resistance to the stunties over the wall.

'Right then lads, whos holdin' back on the beer?'

He gratefully accepted the soon offered drink, and wondered if any of his companions had stayed behind.

Dorin looked out over the battlements, having to stand on his toes to see anything. Since the last wave, there hadn't really been all that much to do. In fact, he'd found the fight itself rather, well, dull. The young dwarf had taken an injury to the eye quite early in the fighting and was now sporting an eye-patch, which was really the only interesting thing to happen to him.

He was also incredibly drunk. There were a couple of moments in which he'd slipped over and nearly fallen over the edge, but the Afacian soldiers seemed to care enough about his survival to catch him before he went all the way. He took another swig of his mead and scratched his bad eye. After that, he decided to go for a stroll along the wall while he waited for the next wave to come in. He wondered if he had time to sufficiently sober up.

The eerie silence between each attack always made Kainz uneasy, he stood looking over the landscape over the wall and had a quiet sigh to himself he was concerned about those fighting off the last of the Puppet Master. It made his meditation to reclaim lost magic harder than usual as he couldn't focus that well. In combat however he only focused on protecting and supporting those with his magic using enchant when he could, shield against enemy magic and even using knockdown on charging Fae.

Kainz lifted his hand to scratch his forehead then felt the bandage. He'd forgotten that he was caught in a multi explosion attack by Fae, Over-estimating his own powers he'd attempted to use Mass knockdown only for it to fail; he'd never mastered the spell, though somehow he still was alive. And he wanted to stay that way. He began to make mana batteries for Afacian soldiers that had some quartz. He only made them for the soldiers' use and when he was done with the battle he'd return what was left over. During this time he wondered around the walls trying to find Dorin, Kainz was still under oath to assist the Dwarves anyway he could; which would, of course, be easier if Dorin had actually stayed in one place. But being independent, not having to take orders from any particular voice was all new to Kainz.

Bran sat down and rested with his back against the wall, his tall form just about fitting behind the parapet and preventing anyone taking pot shots at him. He drank his ale in silence watching an odd looking human a little further down the wall crouching and working away at something. Turning to one of the soldier by the fire he spoke.

'Alright lad, what's that there fella slavin' awa' at?'

'That magical fella there is doing a good service to this company sir. Makes mana batteries out of quartz, and despite very few of us having any weapons that can use 'em, they fetch a pretty penny from those that do, and keep us in good spirits!' He said, hand resting protectively on the half keg of beer being shared about. 'We haven't let the fella know yet, as the batteries get to the right place, and if I may make a humble suggestion, it helps morale that we make a profit off it, sir.'

Bran grinned at the man, and raised his tankard. 'Ah think yur right laddie, nu need tah make ah fuss of it. An nu moure o' that 'sir' stuff. It's ether cap'n, or just Bran. Or Bastard if ah ain't payin' attention.' He said as he pushed himself off the ground. 'Ah wel' ah may as well go say hello to our beer provider. As you were la...' Before he could finish his sentence a cross bow bolt whizzed past Bran's ear.

'Bear fukin' wept!' He cursed as he felt his ear, before leaning over the wall. 'LEARN TO AIM BETTER YAH WEE CRETTINS! Honestly, no respect for the lull of battle.' He grumbled as he walked down the wall. Alittle way down he noticed a dwarf wearing an eye patch.

'Ah was almost wearin' one of them myself, eh lad!' He said to a young, drunk looking dwarf with an eye patch, before looking more closely at him. 'By Bear! What happened teh you Dorin! De yeh want me teh call doon the medic?'

Dorin still wasn't entirely sure of where he was. He'd sobered up a little since he'd started his stroll, but the young Dwarf still had double-vision and a pair of legs made entirely for not using. Ever. It took him a few seconds to even notice that someone was in his way. He looked up and spent a further five seconds to focus on his new companion.

"...Wha-ya.. w... wuh... wander... no.... want... wha-ya want, Bran?"

He fiddled with his ring for a bit, then looked back at Bran, swaying quite dangerously on his feet.

While on the wall Kainz chose to occupy his time by speaking to a few of the soldiers, it made him feel a bit of comfort, in fact, talking to the Afacians... Well, this was his home city after all, yet he kept that information to himself. He then overheard a very loud man on another part of the wall but not too far from him. He turned and saw a big familiar face "Bran.."

He remembered his name because the biggest memory he had of him was the day he was captured alongside the Dwarves.. A day Kainz would rather forget. Heading towards his location he also noticed Dorin standing, if you call that standing anyway. With another sigh he placed his hand on his scepter end as it attached to his holster. Walking behind Bran he'd say "Dorin, has there ever been a time you weren't drunk...?"

He would look at Bran next and bow his head, "Sir" is all he'd say. Oddly, he felt a form of leadership from this man and instantly felt calm. Still feeling guilty from trying to use a spell he wasn't ready for he hesitantly asked, "If there is anything..i can do to help please let me know Master Bran"

One of Kainz's unusual habits was that he called anyone stronger than him 'master'.

'I wan' yah too sober up alittle, you drunk'n sod!' said Bran, grinning and gripping the dwarfs shoulder. 'Fight like this for much longer an' you'll be seein' ol' Thor in his mead halls!'

Bran paused for a moment, thinking.

'Actually that's nu a bad idea. Good thinkin' lad.'

Bran then paused in this rather one sided conversation, to allow Kainz to join in the small circle, interjecting only when he tried to call Bran 'Master'.

'I'll be havin' none a that, lad. I ain't no ones master....' Bran paused mid sentence as a low rumble came from beyond the wall, everyone there knew exactly what that meant.

'There is something you can do son, stop them blasted Pyrites from getting over the walls! Bran said as he braced against the parapet, sword held ready to chop at the first hands to come into view.

Dorin still wasn't really aware of what Bran was saying. He'd sobered up a little, but still nowhere near enough to be anywhere near the point of understanding what anybody else was saying. He just looked at the comparative giant with an expression of complete bewilderment.

It wasn't until a few moments later when the ground started rumbling that Dorin was granted a moment of clarity. It took a second or two for him to get up to speed on what was going on, but as soon as he was on the same page as the others, the spell was broken and the adrenaline that was now violently spreading throughout his body brought him back to full capacity.

"Let's do this then, Bran. Kainz." the young Dwarf stated.

He then stood, not even slightly swaying, and raced after Bran as fast as his little legs would allow him.

He stopped and nodded to the nearby soldiers, and then just stood, trying again to look out over the parapet, and waited for what was coming.
