Perry knew that this would be a busy time of year. As he gathered more handfuls of leaves and placed them in the wheelbarrow, he paused to take a deep breath. Autumn this year in Afacia was particularly colourful and there was a clean crispness in the air that he relished. A chance to cleanse himself of the noxious fumes that surrounded him every day in the Apothecary's workshop.
Clearing the leaves from the herb garden shouldn't be taking this long....not only were there more leaves than usual, but the bushes and trees were smothered in fruits and berries. It all just seemed more...alive.
He pushed the barrow down to the compost heap at the end of the garden. He wasn't sure if it was a trick of the light as the sun set, but it seemed bigger. He shrugged, and tightened his grip on the barrow. Almost done...
Then there was a jolt. Stupid old wheel had stuck again.
They said they heard the screams all the way from the Lazy Griffin. But it was too late. All that was left was an upturned wheelbarrow. The compost heap had all but vanished. As had poor Perry.
